Jesse Grimes - One Heart Fire's video: Farm School and ELI at the Permaculture Skills Center Week 2

This is the second in a series of videos documenting my experience as a student in the Farm School at the Permaculture Skills Center in Sebastopol, California. This is a 13 week program designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of permaculture, ecological design, and farming, as well as helping to mentor them into careers in the world of organic, and better than organic agriculture. I am enrolled in the Ecological Landscaper Immersion track of the Farm School, which means I will also be learning about permaculture and ecological design as it relates to the landscaping industry. This was the second week of the land based intensive that started out the course. The week started out with August York of Growing Solutions talking to us in depth about soil science, and the balancing of minerals in the soil. Next we moved into our first design exercise, creating a concept design for a potential campground at the Permaculture Skills Center. This was a group design project, so there was a strong element of learning to work with others in the process. We presented our designs and then received feedback from Eric Ohlsen, founder of Permaculture Artisans and the PSC. We also spent an afternoon learning about a few of the plant families, and how to do basic identification of plants in the landscape. At the end of the week, Eric Ohlsen joined us again to share some of the design artifacts that have been created by Permaculture Artisans. Afterwards, he shared with us his personal journey with permaculture and activism, and how he came to see permaculture landscaping as an effective way to bring about change in his own life and the world.
