Steinitz plays the world's first official Championship Match against Zukertort in New York 1886, ushering in the "modern era of chess." He then goes on to play Russian master Mikhail Chigorin in Havana 1889. In 1890 Steinitz loses a cable match to Chigorin in an argument over the Evans Gambit, but defends his OTB title against Gunsberg in New York 1890. The Champ then beats Chigorin again in Havana 1892.
