@Humbucker Covers Revisited: How Much Difference Do They Make To Tone? (Crazyparts Area59's)
Welcome to Perky's Analog Gear Demos. Please subscribe for more demos of vintage & rare effects pedals! A couple of years ago, I compared two sets of Monty's PAF pickups - one with covers; and this set without - to see what the tonal differences were. But being handmade pickups, the differences we hear could have been due to factors other than the covers. 90% was likely the extra metal; but we couldn't rule out differences in the core sound of the handwound coils. Since having these uncovered pickups in my Les Paul, the extra glassy high end has actually been grating on me slightly...I think, on balance, I prefer the sound of covered PAFs. So today, I'm going to repeat that last video - but using exactly the same pickups. I'll be fitting a set of the Crazyparts Area59 gold PAF covers which are vintage correct to the extreme. The guitar setup will be staying identical - so the only thing that will change is the pickup covers. What do you think? Which do you prefer? What are the differences? Comment below! Guitar is a 2003 Gibson Les Paul Custom recorded through a Cornell Romany Plus (Celestion AlNiCo Blue; Aston Spirit Condenser) and a Dr Z DB4 (Celestion AlNiCo Cream; sE RNR1 ribbon) with a Schoeps CMC6 room mic. jp@joeperkins.co.uk Vector images by freepik.com
