Joe Perkins's video: OX4 Beano PAFs Do They Nail The Clapton Tone

@OX4 Beano PAFs...Do They Nail The Clapton Tone?!?
Welcome to Perky's Analog Gear Demos. Please subscribe for more demos of vintage & rare effects pedals! I've got a new set of pickups to show you today folks :-) I've recently been renovating my 1992 Les Paul Standard (full video coming soon) and as part of that, I armed it with a set of the uncovered, Alnico III OX4 Beano PAF pickups. Nice! Alnico III magnets were used in a handful of vintage PAFs from the late 50s, but it was much more common to find them with A2 and A5s. However, the combination of modern-produced A3 magnets, a low wind and being uncovered, these are said to be able to get you close to the fabled Eric Clapton Beano album tone. Instead of using any pedals, I'm going to be going very old school - and copying the setup Eric used on that album as closely as I'm able to. Instead of gain pedals, I'm going to plug directly in to my Hughes & Kettner Puretone (don't let the manufacturer fool you - the Puretone is a handwired 40W Marshall Plexi circuit!) and crank it up to the point where it wants to kill me. All gain/volume changes will be done with the guitar's volume & tone knobs. What do you think? Do they sound like the Beano album? Did I come anywhere close to getting them sounding 'right'? Comment below! Guitar is a 1992 Gibson Les Paul Standard recorded through a Hughes & Kettner Puretone (Fane Ascension F70; Aston Spirit Condenser, '70s Sennheiser MD441& sE R1 ribbon) with a Schoeps CMC6 room mic. www.facebook.com/joeperkinsmusic jp@joeperkins.co.uk 0:00 Intro 2:11 Playing 12:23 Outro Vector images by freepik.com
