Joe Perkins's video: Hylight Custom 50 Fifty Watts Of Handwired British 504 Punch

It was essentially the classic Hiwatt DR504 circuit distilled down into a slightly more manageable format...20 watts, and powered by EL84 tubes. But the tonal footprint of that classic circuit was undeniable. Today, we have that amp's daddy - the Custom 50 VR504....a true-to-the-original reworking of the classic 504 circuit, with no such 'scaling down' or significant changes. Fifty watts too much for you? Then look elsewhere. You want an amp to break up at bedroom volume? Think again. This amp takes no prisoners. Handwired here in the UK using premium quality components (including Partridge-designed transformers), this really is as good as you can get when it comes to recreating that classic circuit from yesteryear. As is Hylight's way, you do get a couple of extra features in the form of a line out and an Effects Loop. But that's where the niceties end...beyond that, this amp is LOUD and unforgiving. To really let it shine, I've also gotten my hands on two of Hylight's 2x12 VE212F cabinets - one is loaded with the flagship Fane A60 AlNiCo speakers; and the other has Fane's ceramic speakers...the F70's. I'll be cranking the amp through both of them to see how they differ....and maybe, just maybe, both at once! ;-) What do you think? A killer box of British punch? Or not for you? Comment below!
