@Silicon Steel: Has Muir Audio Design Captured REAL Transformer Saturation & Feel?!
Check this pedal out here: https://www.muiraudiodesign.com/siliconsteeloverdrive Earlier this year, I showed you the Morphtone EQ - a very clever and in-depth piece of tone-shaping equipment. And now, Colin Muir has cooked up a very unique overdrive pedal: the Silicon Steel. Silicon Steel (so I'm told!) is the particular alloy used in transformers to boost the internal magnetism - and this pedal is names as such because it houses a transformer within the circuit. But unlike most pedals that utilise a transformer in their design, this one isn't just arbitrarily on the end of the circuit for a little bit of colouration. No - this one is used as a bona fide gain stage. The signal is slammed into it to cause the core of the transformer to saturate - imparting its distinctive squishy and sizzly behaviours. The two band EQ is also deceivingly simple. It hinges around a fixed mid-point - so you can boost both knobs for a scoopy sound and cut both for a mid-pushed sound; as well as using them in their own right for treble and bass tweakage. Cool, eh? What do you think? Thick, rich transformer tones reminiscent of diming a vintage amp? Or not for you? Comment below! Amp is a Vajra JTM45 clone running into a Zilla Studio Pro 2x12 cabinet loaded with Celestion AlNiCo Gold & G12M Heritage Greenback speakers. Recorded with Aston Spirit Condenser, '70s Sennheiser MD441 and sE RNR1 ribbon mics, with a Schoeps CMC6 room mic. Reverb is a Dr Z Z-Verb unit. 0:00 Intro 2:52 Telecaster 10:10 Les Paul 14:12 Outro www.facebook.com/joeperkinsmusic jp@joeperkins.co.uk Vector images by freepik.com
