And a huge thank you to all my existing patrons - you make these videos possible. In this video, I describe the aperture function of something very simple - a glass plate. The aperture function basically compresses the plate into a single plane, and asks how it causes a plane wave to behave. If the plate has thickness variation along the aperture's axis, you can describe its aperture function in exactly the same way. This allows us to represent the aperture function not only of glass plates but also of diffraction gratings and lenses. This is part of my graduate series on optoelectronics / photonics, and is based primarily on Coldren's book on Lasers as well as graduate-level coursework I have taken in the EECS department at UC Berkeley.
