Happy Thanksgiving. I present to you “The Thief and the Cobbler May 1992 Workprint” that has been remastered. This is something I’ve been wanting to do for years now and I finally get the job done after four tries. And now people can view the first workprint in the highest quality possible. For newcomers, here's a brief history of the film. The project started in 1964 based off of the Mulla Nasrudin stories from Idries Shah. By 1972, Richard Williams had a falling out with the family, but was allowed to keep the characters he created. Williams would hire veteran animators Ken Harris, Art Babbitt, Emery Hawkins, and Grim Natwick to work in his studio in London and help teach him and his staff. He was funded by a Saudi Arabian Prince to do a 10-minute test in 1978, after completing it a year later, he backed out after Williams missed two deadlines and went over-budget, from going $100,000 to over $200,000. In 1986, he met Jake Eberts and it was funded by Allied Filmmakers to complete the film. Later on, Williams’ staff was hired to do the animation for “Who Framed Roget Rabbit?”, which was completed in 1988 and was a success. He made a negotiating deal with Warner Bros. to finish the project. In 1992, it’s still not finished, he made a workprint to show to Warner Bros., and it wasn’t received well. People have said he needed 10-15 more minutes to complete, but that’s not entirely true. The completed footage was 2/3 complete with the rest being in pencil tests and storyboards. Due to them worried about Disney’s Aladdin and their lawyers, they chickened out and backed out the project. The Completion Bond Company, started to take over the project and fired Richard Williams. Fred Calvert, who observed Williams’ staff during the help from Warner Bros., took over as director to finish the job in 18 months. In September 1993, the film was finished and released in Australia called, “The Princess and the Cobbler”, scenes were cut, scenes were redone, and musical numbers were added. In December 1994, Miramax was the only company to distribute the U.S. rights. Harvey Weinstein decided to re-cut the film even more, adding voices to mute characters, becoming “Arabian Knight” in 1995. The Home Video releases suffered with an annoying blue tint and being only in Pan-and-Scan. In the 2000’s, some would go through their way to make fan-edits to make it as close to the original as possible, like the Recobbled Cut. The person who made the Recobbled Cut thinks he is superior than others and has harass others who liked the film. In 2012, a documentary was made called, “Persistence of Vision”, people who helped with the film talked about their history with the film and how it happened. Over the years, Richard Williams wouldn’t talk about the film after it was taken from him. By 2013, he was open to the film again and screened an unfinished version called “The Thief and the Cobbler: A Moment in Time”, he has said that he’s satisfied the way it is. He unfortunately passed away on August 17, 2019, never getting to see his version originally envisioned. Will it ever get completed? Perhaps it could get “The King and the Mockingbird” treatment.
