@'The Scotsmans Salute - 11th Jan 2019 - 60103 'Flying Scotsman' - York
On friday 11 January 2019 a special charter train came from London Kings Cross to York, hauled by 60103 'Flying Scotsman'. This was a tribute to Sir William McAlpine who in January 1973 saved the locomotive from scrapping after a financially disastrous tour of North America. He owned the locomotive until 1996, when it changed hands again, before becoming part of the National Collection in 2004. Following the arrival of 'Flying Scotsman' from London Kings Cross, there was a special ceremony at the National Railway Museum where the Class 90 electric loco no 90028 was named 'Sir William McAlpine'. This later hauled the charter train back to London. Sir William McAlpine died on 4 March 2018 aged 82, and during his lifetime gave a lot to British railway preservation. He became involved in a plan to save the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway and became its chairman. He helped rescue the Carnforth LMS engine shed taking a controlling interest from 1974 until 1987. This became Steamtown now home to West Coast Railways. He chaired the RH&DR, the Dart Valley Railway, and established and chaired the Railway Heritage Trust. He was president of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society, who provided the maroon Mk1 coaches used for this railtour. Seen here the train arrives at York Station, then the loco moves to the Railway Museum yard. After the inside ceremony, 90028 'Sir William McAlpine' moves outside for a photo opportunity with 'Flying Scotsman' before taking the charter train back to London.
