Julian Thurgood's video: The Lakelander and The Cumbrian Mountain Express - Carlisle - 18th May 2019

Saturday 18th May 2019 saw 2 charter steam train trips travel up the West Coast Main Line via Shap to Carlisle. 'The Lakelander' by Saphos Trains came from Crewe, using 3 locos. 70000 ‘Britannia’: Crewe – Shap Summit – Carlisle, 45231 ‘Black Five Sherwood Forester’: Carlisle – Cumbrian Coast – Carnforth, then Class 47 diesel: Carnforth – Crewe. 'The Cumbrian Mountain Express' by The Railway Touring Company came from London Euston, using electric loco 86259 'Peter Pan'/'Les Ross' from London to Carnforth, then 45690 'Leander' from Carnforth to Carlisle, returning via Settle and Hellifield to Preston, where the steam loco was replaced with the electric one. Seen here is Britannia arriving at Carlisle and going for servicing. Very shortly after Leander arrives, and then leaves for servicing. The Sherwood Forester had been waiting at Carlisle since before these 2 trips arrived. After Leander left for the return trip via Settle, I caught a train to Whitehaven, and filmed the returning trip with Sherwood Forecter first at Whitehaven Harbour, then at Seascale Station, after its water break at nearby Sellafield. The sound level is reduced for the Whitehaven sequence due to me been followed onto the harbour by a flock of kids who thought it fun to stand near me and swear a lot! There was virtually nothing of the train to be heard here anyway, with the train initially about 5km away as it comes round the coast by Lowca, then Parton, before quietly coasting to a brief stop at Whitehaven.
