Ring-Tailed Lemur In Hamburg Zoo, Germany Ring-Tailed Lemur The ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) is the most recognized lemur due to its long, black and white ringed tail. It belongs to Lemuridae, one of five lemur families, and is the only member of the Lemur genus. Like all lemurs it is endemic to the island of Madagascar. Ring-Tailed Lemur inhabits gallery forests to spiny scrub in the southern regions of the island. Ring-Tailed Lemur is omnivorous. Ring-Tailed Lemur is active exclusively in daylight hours. The ring-tailed lemur is highly social, living in groups of up to 30 individuals. Ring-Tailed Lemur is also female dominant, a trait common among lemurs. The ring-tailed lemur likes sunbathe. Ring-Tailed Lemur relies strongly on its sense of smell and marks its territory with scent glands. The males perform a unique scent marking behavior called spur marking and will participate in stink fights by impregnating their tail with their scent and wafting it at opponents. Ring-Tailed Lemur uses numerous vocalizations including group cohesion and alarm calls. Experiments have shown that the ring-tailed lemur, despite the lack of a large brain (relative to simiiform primates), can organize sequences, understand basic arithmetic operations and preferentially select tools based on functional qualities. Ring-tailed lemurs are unmistakable because of their long, vividly striped, black-and-white tail. They are familiar residents of many zoos. Lemurs use their hands and feet to move nimbly through the trees, but cannot grip with their tails as some of their primate cousins do. Ring-tailed lemurs also spend a lot of time on the ground, which is unusual among lemur species. Ring-Tailed Lemur forage for fruit, which makes up the greater part of their diet, but also eat leaves, flowers, tree bark, and sap https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring-tailed_lemur http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/ring-tailed-lemur/ http://pin.primate.wisc.edu/factsheets/entry/ring-tailed_lemur http://ielc.libguides.com/sdzg/factsheets/ringtailedlemur http://tolweb.org/treehouses/?treehouse_id=4730 http://www.lemurworld.com/ring-tailed-lemur/
