That's how long George Floyd had a knee pushed up against his neck while he laid helplessly on the ground, all while 3 other police officers stood guard, not doing a single thing. 8 minutes and 46 seconds. 8 minutes. 46 seconds. If you aren't in the financial position to donate, please at the very least sign the petitions and read up on these resources to educate yourself. Please talk to your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors about these topics and open up the conversation. It's fine if you don't feel educated enough about these topics yet but it is NOT okay for you to stay that way. I definitely felt that way a lot recently but I have learned so much by talking with my peers and being open to new ideas. The point of activism is literally that-- to be ACTIVE. If you're posted a black square on your social media at any point today for and , truly reflect on the INTENT of your actions. Due to the recent wave of people participating in the movement, it has actually been COUNTERproductive to the Black Lives Matter movement. Many participants have incorrectly used the Black Lives Matter hashtag rather than the and hashtags that were meant to be used. Because of this, the people who use were using the Black Lives Matter hashtag to stay updated on news and resources have had their feed flooded with black squares that provided no helpful information. Although these people likely had good intentions with their actions, it ended up hurting the movement overall. In the end, all I'm saying is that if you're going to be participating in this activism, make sure you're paying attention to the result of your actions, regardless of your intent. If you're going to be posting a black square on your social media to "spread awareness", the least you can do is to also include a link to a donation page or a petition or reading material.
