Relay races take the form of professional races and amateur games. In the Olympic games, there are several types of relay races that are part of track and field. In athletics, the two standard relays are the 4x100 metre relay and the 4x400 metre relay. Traditionally, the 4x400 metre relay finals are the last event of a track meet[citation needed], and is often met with a very enthusiastic crowd, especially if the last leg is a close race.[A] It is hard to measure exact splits in a 4x400 (or a 4x100) relay. For example, if a team ran a 3:00 4x400, it does not mean every runner on the team has to run a 45 second open 400, because a person starts accelerating before he/she has the baton, therefore allowing for slightly slower overall open 400 times. A 4x400 relay generally starts in lanes for the first leg, including the handoff. The second leg then proceeds to run in lanes for the first 100 metres, after which point the runners are allowed to break into the first lane on the backstretch, as long as they do not interfere with other runners. A race organiser then puts the third leg runners into a line depending on the order in which they are running (with the first place closest to the inside). The faster teams pass first, while the slower teams have to slide in to the inside lanes as they come available. A wheelbarrow race is a competitive game in which teams of two players race with one teammate playing the role of the driver, and the other playing the role of the wheelbarrow. The driver holds on to the other player's ankles, while the other player walks with his hands. In some cultures it is commonly played at fairs and family events. The sack race or gunny sack race is a competitive game in which participants place both of their legs inside a sack or pillow case that reaches their waist or neck and hop forward from a starting point toward a finish line. The first person to cross the finish line is the winner of the race. In some cases the winner of these races is rewarded with a prize of some sort. The race has in recent years been brought into disrepute by competitors (in places as far flung as Arkansas, USA and Dungog, Australia) that have taken to using extra large sacks and running inside the bag. The international sack racing federation frowns upon such activities. An unsavoury "running in the bag" incident in 1974 in New South Wales Australia led to the disqualification of Giovanni Cirillo, which to this date is still considered to be a landmark decision in sack race folk lore. Sack racing is traditionally seen as an activity for children, but people of any age can play in this challenging game. In schools, the sack race often takes place on Sports Day, alongside numerous other events such as the egg and spoon race. It is also a frequent pastime at fairs, and birthday parties. Sack races are also commonly seen at picnics. An egg-and-spoon race is a sporting event in which participants must balance an egg or similarly shaped item upon a spoon and race with it to the finishing line. At many primary schools an egg-and-spoon race is staged as part of the annual Sports Day, alongside other events such as the sack race and the three-legged race.
