@Traditional Japanese Taiko Drumming Performed by Michigan Hiryu Daiko on the Kalamazoo Mall - 1 of 6
Hiryu Daiko (translation: Flying Dragon) performs taiko, a centuries-old Japanese percussion tradition which began as long-distance communication. "There are ultimately three different components to playing taiko," says Esther Vandecar, founder of Michigan Hiryu Daiko. "The rhythm; choreographed movements, stances, and shouts; and the embodiment of the spirit behind the music." Their unamplified, big drums were too overwhelming for a cell phone camera microphone. This video was recorded at 7:31:51 to 7:33:22 p.m. EDT on Friday, June 2, 2017 with a handheld Kyocera Hydro C5170 mobile smartphone. This performance took place during the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo's annual Art on the Mall event during downtown Kalamazoo's June Jubilee. The performance was held in the 300 block of the S. Kalamazoo Mall in front of the Kalamazoo Gazette, on the roadway in front of Art on the Mall's Entertainment Stage.
