This song was a request, and while not my favorite song in the world, I do like the syncopation used throughout the drum part – both in the first line of each verse, and throughout the post-choruses (I think that’s what you call those sections?). Even the fill leading into the last chorus has accents on the 2s, which give it a touch of syncopation. Silversun Pickups is an indie rock band that has been going now for 22 years, with six studio albums to their credit. The band become recognized when one of their early songs was added to the Rock Band video games, allowing that song’s album to go Gold, and two subsequent albums to peak in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200. “Substitution” was a single off their second album “Swoon”, and while not cracking the Billboard Hot 100 (only one of the band’s singles ever did), it did hit on Billboard’s Alternative chart. The drummer is the self-taught Chris Guanlao. This type of song is a little different for me, but fun.
