The 5th Dimension combined two songs from the iconoclastic 60’s musical “Hair” – this is actually a “show tune” written for the revolutionary 60’s rock musical “Hair” that became an essential part of any discussion of the Hippie movement, anti war protests, free love and psychedelia. The song spent 6 weeks on top of the charts in 1969, the number 2 song of that year (No 1 was “Sugar Sugar”) and is considered of one of the top 100 pop/rock songs of all time. It won the the Grammy Award in 1970, the group’s second one, after “Up, Up and Away” won it two years earlier. The song was a “lead in” to issuing the group’s most successful album Age of Aquarius which included their follow up No. 1 song “Wedding Bell Blues”.
