Kemp Strings's video: Super Slow Motion Struck String slap bass technique at the University of St Andrews

@Super Slow Motion Struck String (slap bass technique) at the University of St Andrews
An elastic string being struck in in super slow motion. Slap bass technique was used by Dr Jonathan Kemp as recorded by Dr Paul Cruickshank at the University of St Andrews School of Physics & Astronomy. The string is struck off centre as is the case for hammers striking piano strings and for slap bass. Thanks to Dan Russel https://twitter.com/drussellpsu for requesting this video of a struck string with the strike near the termination. A previous video shows a strike in the centre and can be viewed at: https://youtu.be/9O3VEXzuOKI Portions of a musical instrument string that are under tension in a straight line experience no net force and therefore no acceleration. Acceleration happens for portions of string that are curved. When a string is struck, a portion of the string is given a velocity pulse (an approximately constant velocity for a short duration in a direction transverse to the axis of the string). The transverse velocity on the string satisfies the wave equation with the solution being travelling waves. Physical modelling simulations of such travelling waves are outlined in the web link: https://ccrma.stanford.edu/realsimple/travelingwaves/Struck_String.html In the current video, the forward and backward going pulses of constant velocity can be seen as diagonal portions of string displacement (with their stright line profile showing an aproximately constant transverse velocity). The middle of the string shows a stationary flat line once the initial input velocity pulse has passed. Reflections from the ends are responsible for the resulting periodic motion. After the input strike has finished the only accelrations occur at the four corners visible between the flat and diagonal sections of string.
