@Deodhar Trophy FINAL 2019-20: Highlights | IND C vs IND B | India B won by 51 runs
Deodhar Trophy 2019-20, IND C vs IND B | India B won by 51 runs Brief scores: India B 283/7 in 50 overs (Kedar Jadhav 86, Yashasvi Jaiswal 54, Vijay Shankar 45, K Gowtham 35; Ishan Porel 5/43) beat India C 232/9 in 50 overs (Priyam Garg 74; Shahbaz Nadeem 4/32, Mohammed Siraj 2/40) by 51 runs. India C arrived in the final high on confidence. They were coming off crushing victories - one by a margin of over 200 runs, and the other over 100 runs. But when it mattered the most, their collective form just deserted them, handing the trophy to India B - who were quite the antithesis, considering their win was built on a collective effort of which Kedar Jadhav and Shahbaz Nadeem were at the forefront. It's not that India C were complete duds on the day (November 4). They had standouts, too, in the form of Ishan Porel with his five-for and 18-year-old Priyam Garg with his impressive 73. But it's just that they weren't backed up enough. Languishing at 140/6 while chasing 284, the only outside chance rested with Axar Patel whose 98-run blitz had set up the win against the same opposition a couple of days back. But no sooner than his straight six off Rana inspired some obscure hope, he was run out by the same bowler at the non-striker's end, with the ball inadvertently deflecting off the finger. It was that sort of a day. So it should come as no surprise that earlier, even a Mayank Agarwal - he of an average of 100-plus this season - perished for a measly 28. That had come soon after captain Shubman Gill's departure in the second over of the chase, driving uppishly to extra-cover off Mohammad Siraj. Virat Singh, the other catalyst in their win over India B the other day, was also run out, well before his cohort Axar met that fate. So the chase had faltered even as early as the 12th over mark. Unfortunately, there was worse to follow. Nadeem, who had earlier removed Agarwal - a victim of his own aggression, was only getting into his groove. And he all but sealed the deal with quick strikes of Suryakumar Yadav and Dinesh Karthik - both falling to the left-armer's arm-ball variety with the ball skidding into their pads. Meanwhile, watching all this was Garg, batting nicely after coming in at No.3. But after scoring more than half his team's runs at that point with a knock of 74, and with little support forthcoming, he just couldn't help himself from charging at Siraj, only to lose his stumps. Perhaps he should've trusted Axar more, who was keeping him company. In contrast to their chase which just fizzled into a 51-run defeat, the start of the day was a lot more promising for India C. Right-arm seamer Porel had found Ruturaj Gaikwad's outside edge for a duck, with Suryakumar's brilliant diving catch worth a mention. Porel also had opposition captain Parthiv Patel nicking off soon after. Actually, India B were struggling after winning the toss and batting. When Jalaj Saxena trapped the in-form Baba Aparajith LBW, they were 73/3 in the 21st over, only held together by Yashasvi Jaiswal until that point. It wasn't until Jadhav came in at No. 5 that the innings found momentum which culminated into a proper flourish towards the end, capped off by a hurricane 10-ball 35 by Krishnappa Gowtham - who was particularly severe on medium-pacer Diwesh Pathania in a penultimate over that went for 31. That flourish, combined with their bowling effort, was enough to deliver the title.
