@Saurashtra vs Bengal, Final - Ranji Trophy 2019-20: Day 2 | Saurashtra 384/8
Ranji Trophy 2019-20- Saurashtra vs Bengal, Final : Day 2 | Saurashtra 384/8 Brief scores: Saurashtra 384/8 (Arpit Vasavada 106, Cheteshwar Pujara 66; Akash Deep 3-77) vs Bengal Arpit Vasavada and Cheteshwar Pujara showed tremendous application on the second day to put Saurashtra on top. Vasavada got a ton while Pujara struck a half-century as the hosts ended the day on 384 for 8 with the pair scoring 142 for the sixth wicket. Pujara had retired ill on the opening day because of dehydration and throat infection and walked back out this morning with the side wobbling at 206 for 5. With the older and softer ball keeping low late on first day, Bengal continued to stick with the first cherry but came across some stern resistance from both Vasavada and Pujara. The pair blunted anything that was thrown at them and with not much assistance, the visitors turned to the new ball in the 86th over. However, the pacers failed to make use of that as the hosts entered the lunch break on 278 for 5 - having scored 72 in the first session. While the pacers kept things tight, Shahbaz Ahmed did make things happen but failed to create the luck to earn a wicket. He was a tad unlucky when the lbw decision review against Pujara in the 98th over was shot down. Pujara had come down the track and was hit in front but was adjudged not out. The review was taken but the impact was more than three meters and hence the decision stayed. The second session too stayed uneventful with both Pujara and Vasavada content to wear the Bengal bowlers down. The partnership went past 100 and Vasavada marched on towards his second consecutive century. Just like he rescued his side against Gujarat, Vasavada once again stood up and made tough runs when his side needed it the most. While he was exceptional in his application, it was Pujara's determination that helped Saurashtra build the stability they were looking for. The moment of the day came in the 134th over as Vasavada got to his century off 255 balls. Four overs later, Pujara completed his half-century as the hosts looked set to ease past 400. It was Shahbaz who broke through, in the final session, to give Bengal an opening. The left-arm spinner had Vasavada stumped with Saurashtra on the brink of 350. Pujara fell six overs later - lbw off Mukesh Kumar for 66 - as the hosts wobbled to slip to 364 for 8. Chirag Jani and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, however, continued to frustrate the visitors and played out the remainder of the day to stay unbeaten. There was, however, plenty of rejigs for the on-field officials. C Shamshuddin, who was hit on the abdomen on the first day, failed to take the field because of the injury. Piyush Kakkar, the local umpire, then took up the duties of the square-leg umpire as K Anantha Padmanabhan officiated from both ends in the first session. S Ravi took the field as the second official for the remaining two sessions as Shamshuddin took up the responsibility of the tv umpire. Shamshuddin, however, has been ruled out of the contest and will fly home with Yashwant Barde coming in as his replacement.
