Saurashtra vs Maharashtra, Saurashtra won the title | Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022, FINAL: Highlights MAH 248/9 (50) SAUR 249/5 (46.3) Saurashtra won by 5 Wickets Man of The Match: Sheldon Jackson Sheldon Jackson's 133 not out overshadowed Ruturaj Gaikwad's 108 as Saurashtra secured a five-wicket victory over Maharashtra in Ahmedabad on Friday (December 2) to lift the Vijay Hazare Trophy for the first time since their title triumph in 2008. Gaikwad registered his third hundred on the trot, extending his tally to four from five games in the 2022 edition of the competition, but Maharashtra's batters were largely kept in check by the Saurashtra bowlers as they finished with 248/9 in their 50 overs. A 125-run opening partnership involving Jackson and Harvik Desai then provided the platform for the chase, and the 36-year-old Jackson formed useful alliances with the middle order batters to finish unbeaten and take his side over the line. Jackson had the company of Chirag Jani to provide the finishing touches to the chase, with the experienced all-rounder having earlier bagged a hat-trick. Unlike Maharashtra's struggle at the start of the day, Saurashtra's openers were a lot more fluent in the first 10 overs of the chase, with Jackson and Desai scoring boundaries from time to time. They raised the half-century stand in the 12th over before Jackson took the attack to Satyajeet Bachhav in the 15th, scoring two sixes and a four. Jackson reached a 66-ball fifty en route to a century stand that came in 21 overs. Desai also reached a fifty, off 61 deliveries, with two fours off Rajvardhan Hangargekar in the 25th over, while Jackson was happy rotating the strike for a few overs, as the opening pair put Saurashtra in control of the chase. Mukesh Choudhary tried to get Maharashtra back in the game with two wickets in the 27th over, accounting for Desai, who got a leading edge to mid-on, and finding the outside edge of Jay Gohil's bat. Samarth Vyas was dismissed by Vicky Ostwal a few overs later, leaving Saurashtra at 147/3 in the 33rd over. Jackson, who was batting in the 80s at that time, cleared the fence twice off Bachhav in the 37th over, got to his hundred with a couple, before cutting a Hangargekar delivery to the boundary. Prerak Mankad, at the other end, did not have a productive outing as he was bowled by 1 by Bachhav. Saurashtra were left with an equation of 57 to get off the last 10 overs and Jackson and Chirag Jani approached the end overs with calmness, playing risk-free cricket. They collected the singles while Jani struck a couple of boundaries, keeping the required rate under control. Hangargekar ended up being hit for a four each by Jani and Jackson in the 45th over, with the latter also being put down by Hangargekar in the following over. Jackson finished it off with a six and a four off Manoj Ingale in the 47th over. Earlier, having been asked to bat, Maharashtra lost Pavan Shah early to a run out and could manage only 18 runs in the first 10 overs despite Bachhav striking a couple of boundaries. Gaikwad, who was on 4 off 32 deliveries at that stage, managed his first boundary only in the 17th over when he swept a Dharmendrasinh Jadeja delivery over backward square leg. He also put away a short ball from Kushang Patel for a six, providing some much-needed impetus to his innings. The second wicket partnership, worth 66 runs, came to an end. Gaikwad reached three figures off 125 deliveries with two successive sixes off Chirag Jani in the 40th over, having earlier scored a maximum off Prerak Mankad. Kazi too cleared the fence twice in the 41st over which was bowled by Bhut. Gaikwad and Kazi added 94 runs for the fourth wicket before the former was run out in the 42nd over. Kazi fell to Mankad a short while later, leaving Maharashtra at 205/5 after 44 overs. Unadkat, despite going for a boundary in his final over, finished with economical figures of 1-25. Jani picked up a hat-trick in the 49th over, dismissing Saurabh Navale, Hangargekar and Ostwal with full deliveries. Naushad Shaikh struck three successive fours off Kushang Patel in the final over to help Maharashtra finish with a respectable total, but one that proved insufficient in the end.
