Along the North Thompson Highway 5 The Plaza Hotel the Kamloops bars are left behind And the yellow grassland changes with the ride To a forest of black trees at either side Up by Hinton the prairie begins, And the engine takes us in, we ride with packs of cheeses and an open beer Through the brilliant early morning through the brilliant early day The light fills the sky as we go on our way Up by Smoky Lake the road curves round We see the town in the hollow below Mader runs across a field to take a picture He's a shadow, against the yellow ground Reindeer Lake in the Heart of the Shield At the moving time gone center of our journey The beating of the engine as we climb another hill Reminds me of my own time passing of my own time passing The lad in the back comes out of his shell Lighting fires by the still cold lake We turn on the radio to hear sixties requests All around us are the black trees and the flickering fire light We drive down under the North's low cloud Over the Churchill River bridge and we order a coffee in the La Ronge cafe Where they all watch satellite TV A western starring John Wayne is on the screen The waitress talks about her trip to Spain Outside, the colours are grey and black Reindeer Lake in the heart of the shield At the moving time gone centre of our journey The beating of the engine as we climb another hlll Reminds me reminds me of my own time passing We are ten years older now than when we went to Reindeer Lake There didn't seem to be a reason in the world For noticing the lines that grow away from youth Reindeer Lake in the heart of the Shield
