@The terrible war between Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna | War of Agnigrah
A terrible war was fought between Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna at Agnigrah. Shiva fought for his Devotee or Bhakt, while Krishna fought for his Grandson. Banasura, was a thousand-armed Asura King and son of Bali. Banasura is believed to have ruled the present-day central Assam with his capital at Sonitpur (present-day Tezpur, Assam). He ruled over a large kingdom. So strong and fierce was his influence that all the kings and even some of the devas trembled in front of his power. Banasura use to worship Rasalingam and was an ardent devotee of Shiva. He used his thousand arms to play the Mridanga when Shiva was performing the tandava dance. Shiva gave Banasura a boon and Banasura requested Shiva to be his protector. Banasura became invincible. As time passed, Banasura became cruel and arrogant. Lord Krishna had a grandson named Aniruddha. He was the son of Pradyumna and a bright young prince. Aniruddha was in love with Usha, the daughter of demon king Banasura. Aniruddha had followed Usha to her father’s kingdom Sonitapura. There Banasura sent guards to capture him but he killed them all. Later Banasura used his magical powers to imprison Aniruddha successfully. Krishna, Balarama and all other family and relatives of Aniruddha were worried as he did not return for several months. Narada muni informed them about Aniruddha’s imprisonment. Krishna along with Balarama, Satyaki, Nanda, Gada and many others decided to siege Sonitapura and rescue Aniruddha. Due to Shiva’s protection, Shiva along with his son Kartikeya joined Banasura’s army. A terrible battle ensued between the two sides. Lord Shiva and Krishna’s violent fight was a spectacle that all the other Gods, heavenly beings and sages, watched with great intrigue. Lord Shiva released many ghosts and spirits but Krishna killed them all. He even used brahmastras which were countered by those of Krishna’s. Even the Pashupatastra was matched by the Narayanastra. As the fight continued Lord Krishna called for truce and said that he would not kill Banasura, but just cut off his hands. This was due to Lord Shiva’s request and Banasura too apologized to Lord Krishna and he was forgiven. Then the victorious armies of Krishna rescued Aniruddha and went back to Dwaraka. Aniruddha was then married to Usha.
