Tahun 1990-an populasi Pesut Mahakam (Orcaella brevirostris) masih banyak. Namun pada tahun 2000-an populasinya mulai berkurang. Survei dari Yayasan Konservasi RASI, menyebutkan bahwa total populasi pesut mahakam masih di bawah 90 ekor. Kematian mamalia air tawar ini tercatat 4 ekor per tahun.
