Sulla riva di uno stagno la polizia ritrova il corpo di un uomo, Umberto Paradisi, decapitato da una scavatrice. Si tratta, in apparenza, di un omicidio colposo, ipotesi che il susseguente suicidio del presunto responsabile, il manovratore, sembrerebbe avvalorare. In realtà, come scopre ben presto il commissario Luca Peretti incaricato del caso, né l'uomo s'è ucciso con le proprie mani, né il Paradisi è vittima di una disgrazia: in entrambi i casi ci si trova di fronte all'opera di un killer.
