The Mladi Glas and Planika Slovenian folk dance group from Toronto performing at Marchtoberfest at the Alpine Club in Kitchener, formerly Berlin, Ontario. Friday, February 28, 2020 10:00 pm. Mladi Glas was founded in 1974 in Toronto, and the Slovenian youth folk dance group Planika was founded in 1979. In 2019 it was their 45th anniversary. They have over 100 dancers from the Toronto area, and have performed across Canada, the USA and in Slovenia. In 2018 they won the annual So You Think You Can Tanz folk dance competition held at the Alpine Klub, and thus won the privilege of dancing at the opening of Oktoberfest in 2019 in Kitchener-Berlin. Normally dance groups have performed one or two dances at the opening ceremonies, but Mladi Glas made 2 appearances and gave a full performance of over 1/2 hour after the opening ceremonies as a complement to the Golden Keys' show, and later gave an additional full performance. The costumes they are wearing and style of music are widely known as Oberkrainer (in German) or Gorenjska (in Slovenian) and is typical of the Upper Carniola region. In Slovenia polka is very popular and is often played in a lively musical style.
