Kuvera's video: Psychology Behind Blindly Following The Crowd

We are social animals, and we like fitting in and belonging to a group. But sometimes, without realising it, we forget what we stand for - our unique thoughts, behaviour and attitude get lost in the crowd. This tendency to conform is precisely what psychologist Solomon Asch studied in the 1950s, through a series of line judgement experiments. Asch's experiment involved a vision test with 50 male students. In a room, one real participant joined seven confidantes, the real player strategically positioned at the end of the row. Everyone had to state which line (A, B, or C) looked more like the target line, and the answer was quite obvious. At first, everyone gave correct answers. Later, all the confidantes of the study purposely started giving wrong answers. Asch wanted to see if the real participant would follow. Results showed 32% followed the wrong majority on critical trials. In all, 75% conformed at least once, while 25% never did. In a control group with no confidantes, less than 1% gave the wrong answer. This shows how people tend to conform, even if it means going against their own judgement. Asch’s studies on conformity demonstrated the powerful effect of group and peer pressure on individual judgement. Translated into investment behaviour, the ‘herd mentality’ can lead to disastrous investing decisions. And consequences of blindly following the next “hot” trend are only yours to bear. Lesson?
