At a University of Pennsylvania experts roundtable on "Health Disparities: Integrating Knowledge from Genomics, Social Sciences and Law," Professor Sarah Tishkoff, PhD, explained that although gene-associated diseases and treatments have been the source of much medical excitement in recent years, less than 20% of all studies on genetic makeup have involved non-European ethnicities and only about 4% have involved people of African or Hispanic ancestry. This has important implications for the racial and ethnic disparities in the U.S. health care system.
