Here, we have discussed about *Pharmaceutics CH-19.1| Suspensions, their Classification, Advantage & Disadvantage, Ideal Properties* and prepared a best content for you so watch the complete video until the end and read the description below.
*Define Suspension
A Pharmaceutical suspension is a biphasic coarse dispersion in which internal phase (therapeutically active ingredient) is dispersed uniformly throughout the external phase.
*Internal Phase
The internal phase consisting of insoluble solid particles having a range of size(0.5 to 5 microns) which is maintained uniformly through out the suspending vehicle with aid of single or combination of suspending agent.
External phase
The external phase (suspending medium) is generally aqueous in some instance, may be an organic or oily liquid for non oral use.
*Classification
1-Based On General Classes
2-Based on Proportion of Solid Particles
3-Based on Size of Solid Particles
1-Based On General Classes
Oral suspension: ex: antibiotic, paracetamol suspension, antacids.
Externally applied suspension: ex :Calamine lotion.
Parenteral suspension: ex: Procaine penicillin G ,Insulin Zinc Suspension
2-Based on Proportion of Solid Particles
a-Dilute suspension
(2 to10%w/v solid): Ex: cortisone acetate, prednisolone acetate.
b-Concentrated suspension
(50%w/v solid): Ex: zinc oxide suspension.
3-Based on Size of Solid Particles
a-Coarse suspensions (greater than 0.2microns): Suspensions having particle sizes of greater than about 0.2 micron in diameter are called as coarse suspensions.
b-Colloidal suspensions(0.1-0.2microns): Suspensions having particle sizes of suspended solid less than about 0.2 micron in size are called as colloidal suspensions.
c-Molecular dispersion (less than 1.0 nm):Suspensions are the biphasic colloidal dispersions of nano sized drug particles stabilized by surfactants.
*Advantage
Mask The Taste.
Choice Of Solvent.
Prolonged Action Dosage Forms.
Good Bioavailability.
Formulated for topical application.
Formulated for Oral & Parenteral Use.
*Disadvantage
Require shaking before use.
Accuracy of dose is less reliable.
Storage of suspension leads to change in dispersion.
Bulky to carry.
It is difficult to formulate.Â
*Ideal qualities of a good suspension
It should settle slowly, readily re-dispersed on gentle shaking of the container
It should pour readily and evenly from its container.
The suspended particles should not form a cake.
Suspended particles should be small and uniformly sized.
Viscosity must not so high.
It should be chemically inert.
