Largest whale stranding in Sri Lanka draws epic volunteer rescue effort. Volunteers worked through the night to pull the whales back into deeper water after island’s worst mass beaching. When over a hundred ‘Pilot Whales’ began stranding themselves last afternoon along the Panadura beach in West Sri Lanka, it looked like a foregone conclusion that it would prove to be fatal to most. Amidst a dangerous Covid-19 second-wave, the incident presented myriad challenges if a rescue was to be planned.
Sri Lanka has saved some mass stranding 120 pilot whales in a gruelling overnight rescue involving the navy, officials said Tuesday, after the island nation's biggest stranding. 5 pilot whales and one dolphin died of injuries following the mass beaching on Monday on the country's western coast at Panadura. Many on social media were commenting on how the people on the ground were mishandling the whales. The animals were fatigued and stressed, they were smashing their tails around - which was risky for the people in the water. It was difficult for the men (who were also fatigued) to turn them upright against the crashing waves, to direct them into the surf and to move them beyond their own height of water. Rescuers and volunteers were racing to save so many pilot whales stranded on Sri Lanka’s western coast in the country’s biggest mass beaching. The short-finned pilot whales began beaching at Panadura, 15 miles (25km) south of Colombo, shortly before dusk.

A combination of the national navy, Local villagers and volunteers worked together on an overnight operation to push the whales back out to sea in Panadura, Sri Lanka. coronavirus curfew in the area, all to save the stranded whales. Although strandings are relatively common, scientists are still unsure as to why they happen. If they aren’t assisted back into the water, many whales die of dehydration, collapsing under their own weight, or drown when the hightide covers up their blowhole.
Are pilot whales in danger?
Pilot whales can grow up to 6 metres (20 feet) long and weigh a tonne. They are highly social animals. The short-finned species, such as those in Sri Lanka, according to Whale & Dolphin Conservation. Apart from the threat of beaching, pilot whales also face challenges due to human activity. From becoming entangled in fishing gear, to hunting in areas like Japan, short-finned pilot whales often find themselves in jeopardy. They can also become victims of vessel strikes, which injure or kill them. Scarred short-finned pilot whales have been observed in Hawaiian waters, according to the US National Marine Fisheries Service.
WWF and Save the Whales are working hard to preserve the ocean and its inhabitants. The Panadura incident has been confirmed as the largest single pod of whales stranded in the south Asian country by Sri Lanka’s Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA).Whales are at the top of the food chain and play an important role in the overall health of the marine environment, which is why it remains so important to protect them.
