Overview of Dynamic Range Overview of Audio issues inherent in consumer camcorders Overview of Depth of Field and issues with having small image sensors in the camera. Camcorders were originally designed for television broadcast in mind in the early 80’s. They were often heavy and large. The designs have eventually changed throughout the decades to be compact self-contained units that could be held in one hand and capable of recording any situation. The basic design of consumer camcorders is meant for ease of use by the every day person who may know nothing about imaging technology or photographic principles. Cons of Consumer Camcorders: Camcorders are great for the every day person who wants to shoot something without any hassle. The major downsides to consumer camcorders are that both the overall image quality and the design not really intended for professional use. In terms of image, Consumer camcorders always have an image quality that is widely associated with the “video” look. For the average viewer, it’s subconscious. Let’s have a look under the hood of the “video” look. Specifically the video look means lack of dynamic range, poor low light performance and lack of depth of field control. Pros of Consumer Camcorders: Camcorders shine when it comes to documenting events or taking video notes or making short blog videos. Touch screen controls: Touch screen controls can be both a curse and blessing. Pros don’t typically rely on it too much. From an aesthetic and ease of use stand point, simplifying the camera buttons and having a menu driven camera makes it easier for the user in general. From a philosophical point of view, the consumer camcorder takes on an ipad-like simplicity. Even if you need the pro button features of a camera on professional shoots, there’s something just so nice about having a simple camera to use. Don’t think too much, just hit the red button, that’s all.
