There;'s a couple of reasons for that. Mainly its just that you could get your fingers to reach all the way to the higher frets but also you're going to be using gravity a bit with your left hand, we'll talk about that a little later. There's three points of contact. There's contacy on the top of your leg, one on the right thigh, and one at the top of the chest. So the Right Hand come around, and I like to have a bit of a balancing point here, so there's a point of balance so that the arm sits very relaxed.and the hand finds a comfortable angle and I bring my fingers in that position. This position I call "waving bye" (about half way). The thumb on the bass strings and we will talk about the way the firngers rest o the guitar. Relax the left arm and bring up the left hand right up and then position it onto the fret board. That's the correct basic classical position for the left hand and arm.
