Lawn Solutions Australia's video: STRI Rhizotron Establishment Trial Sir Grange Zoysia

The Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) recently conducted this trial to observe Sir Grange Zoysia root establishment using washed turf, thin cut turf and thick cut turf. The data being observed here relates to how turf is harvested on a turf farm. Washed is where the turf has had all of the soil washed from the turf prior to laying turf, this is commonly done for sporting field installations. Thin cut is your most common harvesting method and thick cut is also an option and refers to how much soil is cut/harvested with the turf itself. This trial is showing how the amount of soil on the freshly laid turf effects initial root establishment. A rhizotron allows us to study the soil through a viewing window beneath the surface allowing the root establishment to be documented.
