I am an English teacher here at SOLEX College in downtown Chicago and today we have a special video for you. Today I am going to be giving you the 13 most commonly mispronounced words in English. Now, these are words that you will hear even native speakers mispronounce. English as we know has many rules and sometimes has no rules when it comes to pronouncing words correctly. In addition, there are many words that we’ve borrowed from different languages which can also make pronunciation difficult. Let’s go ahead and look at some of these words. Here you will find words that you should not say or that are being pronounced incorrectly. Then I will show you the words in the form that you should be pronouncing them, correctly. So the first word we have is artic this is very common to hear, artic. Actually it should be pronounced arCtic, arctic. Here at the top which is another variation we have antartic again there is a C in this word so we should be pronouncing this word, antarCtic, antarCtic. Barb wire, this term actually does not exist, it is barbed wire. Canidate, this is very important now that we are waiting to see who the new president of the United States will be, so we have many candidates. The word should be pronounced candidate because there is a D here. Expresso, this is very common to hear, the word is actually espresso without the X. Febuary actually has an R and should be febRuary. Heigth is another common word you may hear people mispronounce but the word height actually does not exist. The word is height, height. Mannaise, which you put on a sandwich actually is mayOnnaise. So you want to pronounce that vowel there, mayonnaise. Mischivious is a common one, it actually seems like we added another “I” there but the word is mischievous because there’s actually no “I” here. Nucular, nuclear. So this is a little bit different because here is nucular, here nuclear is the proper pronunciation of this word. Pronounciation, in some parts of the United States you may hear this a lot. Actually in Chicago I hear a lot of people say pronounciation. The correct is pronunciation. Supposably, with “B” is a word that doesn’t exist. Here supposedly is actually the correct form of the word with “D”. Yoke actually doesn’t exist. The word should be yolk, like the yolk of an egg. Mischivous just to let you know is someone, an adjective for someone who likes to get into a lot of trouble. Maybe a mischievous child. Ok, so go ahead and practice these on your own, the pronunciation. Remember the correct pronunciation can make you sound more like a native English speaker. Go ahead and like, comment, and subscribe to the videos and we will see you next time.
