@Saboteur (C64) - A Playguide and Review - by Lemon64.com
Saboteur was ported onto the C64 in 1986, and published by Durell Software. We play as a Ninja who must infiltrate a secret bunker, steal a disk, and plant a bomb to blow the whole place up, finally to escape in a helicopter. Its all fun as we jump into this classic. Production Notes: =============== Captured: 11th Sept 2019 Narrated: 15th Nov 2019 Edited: 1 Nov 2019 - 23rd Jan 2020 This game came up a a review on the Lukozer channel, and he almost beat the game, so this inspired me to have a go myself. The very easiest level is just a matter of finding the end of the level, collecting the bomb, get the disk and escape. But I was still having trouble memorising the map, and had to restart the game three times. I guess it took long enough to explore the map back in the day (without the help of magazine maps usually) that the easiest difficulty setting would be quite a challenge for the average 8-15 year old playing this. Not sure if I played much on the harder settings, so Im not sure if the bombs are in a fixed position on each setting, or if the bomb is in a random place. I know I have beaten the game on medium, so I can imagine on hard it puts the bomb beside the helicopter, forcing the player to have no time left to reach the end of the level, if they stop of make a mistake. To say you are supposed to be a stealthy silent ninja, he doesnt half make a racket when walking, and isnt exactly slow and stealthy either - forcing the player to rush the level like Rambo. I had this on the Durell Big Four collection, along with Critical Mass and Combat Lynx, and the ubiquitous Lotus Esprit game. I much prefer this game over any of those, even though this is a straight port of the Spectrum version, and running (like the Dizzy games) in a slow ZX emulator. If the player could collect extra time, it would mean they could creep around and still get to the goal. If enemies had their backs turned, and you could crawl and avoid detection, this would have been much better to play as a stealthy ninja. You find boxes containing tools and stars, but with no time to stop on the hard difficulty modes they are almost pointless. Sure you are supposed to be able to switch off the cameras by using the terminals, but with regenerating health and little time, it seems rushing through is easier. Saboteur has its charm and I like it, so I'd give this port a 7 out of 10. I wont be reviewing the sequel, as I found it far less fun, and I'd give that one a 4 out of 10.
