The name Helga Wille is well known among (German) record collectors... She recorded many sides for Telefunken with the orchestras of Adalbert Lutter, Oskar Jerochnik, R.A. Dvorsky and Willy Mattes... Yet very little is known about her (I have been unable to come up with any biographical information)... After the Second World War she had considerable success with the "Nicolets" vocalists but after that she seems to have vanished from the stage... This video features Helga Wille's version of the Zarah Leander song "Ich sag nicht "Ja", Ich sag nicht "Nein" " (I won't say "yes", I won't say "No") from her 1941 movie "Der Weg ins Freie" (The Road to Freedom). "Der Weg ins Freie" is a melodrama which starts in Vienna in 1848 (the time of the revolution against Metternich). Leander plays Antonia Corvelli - an Italian opera singer and star of the Viennese Opera. She has married a Detlev von Blossin - nobleman (Hans Stüwe) from Pommerania. She made a promise to give up her career for him... Without telling him she renews her contract and stays in Vienna while her angered and disappointed husband returns to Pommerania. In his absence Antonia falls under the spell of the shady Count Oginsky (Siegfried Breuer) - an old acquintance of hers. As the revolution unfolds she offers shelter until she has had enough of him and his dealings. As he informs him of her intention to join her husband Oginsky threatens to take her down with him. Antonia decides to fake her own suicide and take refuge in Switzerland. After a few months Antonia decides to try and reunite with her husband - who believes his wife is dead and is being cared for by Luise (Eva Immermann) who has always been love with him. Since her husband's family has never seen her Antonia pretends to be an acquintance. She is promptly informed by a servant that despite mourning the late Antonia the family hopes Detlev will marry Luise. Heartbroke Antonia leaves the estate immediately and settles in Italy where she sings with a travelling opera company... Years later her past catches up with her as she is to sing with a former co-star from the Viennese opera... Although she has altered her appearance he recognises her voice and informs Oginsky at a party. Oginsky travels to Italy and confronts Antonia who is now reduced to singing in restaurants. He threatens to ruin Detlev who has married Luise and thus is a bigamist. Antonia decides to travel to Pommerania in order to confess all that has happened to Detlev. When she arrives she meets Luise again who sees through the charade. She informs Antonia that she and Detlev are happily married and have a son. Antonia does not want to break up Detlev's family and wants to prevent Oginsky from ruining him. She decides to take her own life... As Luise confesses to Detlev that Antonia is alive and came to see her, he rushes to Antonia's hotel... There he finds the dying Antonia. She begs him not the reveal her identity to anyone... When a doctor asks Detlev if he knows who the dying woman is, he holds back his tears and says "No"... Antonia dies peacefully and finds her way to freedom... Aptly directed by Rolf Hansen "Der Weg ins Freie" gave a boost to Zarah Leander's film career which had suffered from a string of highly profitable but mediocre films. He went on to direct her in "Die grosse Liebe" (1941/42) and "Damals"(1942) - Leander's last of 10 movies made at Ufa.
