The song "L'Heure Bleue" was featured in the 1928 musical revue "Es liegt in der Luft" (Lit. There's something in the air) with music by Mischa Spoliansky composed and lyrics by Marcellus Schiffer . Set in a large Berlin department store which acts as a "labyrinth of life" the revue consisted of 24 scenes which parodied and satirized modern society. "Es liegt in der Luft" is famous today because of the presence in the cats of Marlene Dietrich who sang "Wenn die beste Freundin mit der besten Freundin" together with Margo Lion - the revue's star. For Dietrich this was her break out role on stage. Other notable cast members included Oskar Karlweiss, Otto Wallburg, Hubert von Meyerinck, Willy Prager and Ida Wüst. "L'Heure Bleue" was sung and recorded by Margo Lion (the recording can be found on YouTube). Around 1931 an English version (lyrics by Gus Kahn) of the song called "The Hour of Parting" became a popular tune which was performed and / or recorded by the likes of Fred Rich (1931), Glenn Miller (1939) and Benny Goodman. Today's video features the New Mayfair Orchestra - the Gramophone Company's studio band which recorded between 1928 and 1942 with a number of directors - most famously Ray Noble between 1928 and 1934. This version by the New Mayfair Orchestra is particularly beautiful and melancholic with excellent vocals. The video features images of "Lost Berlin" as well as a postcard picture of Marlene Dietrich when she was under contract at UFA studios.
