Today' video features Zarah Leander's Swedish recording of the Tchaikowsky's "Romance in Fa Mineur op5" which was called "Du kommst zurück" (You will be back) in the 1939 melodrama "Es war eine rauschende Ballnacht". "Chanson Triste" was another Tchaikowsky song Leander sang in the movie. Of these, she only recorded the “Romance” in Swedish which was released together with the Swedish version of "Nur nicht aus Liebe weinen". In Paris Eva Busch recorded German and French versions of both Tchaikowsky songs (combined) as well as "Nur nicht aus Liebe weinen”for Columbia in 1940. The singer Annie Rozane recorded a version of the romance called "Tu reviendras" for Polydor. "Es war eine rauschende Ballnacht" starring Zarah Leander, Marika Rökk, Hans Stüwe and Leo Slezak is a highly romanticised / fictionalised biopic of the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikowsky. To its credit the movie does not claim to be an exact biography. In the opening credits it is mentioned that the story is fabricated. The movie owes its existence to Tchaikowsky's music and as such is a well crafted somber melodrama. This video combines the 78rpm release with sequences from "Es war eine rauschende Ballnacht". These sequences have been restored and upscaled to a 4K resolution using Topaz Video Enhance AI. They were then colorized (purely for entertainment purposes) in Adobe Photoshop. I do not claim the colorization to be historically correct but it does give an impression of what the sets and costumes may have looked like. About the record : "Romans" Zarah Leander med Einar Groths Orkester Odeon D- 3071 b / mx Sto 6636-1 Stockholm, 19-10-1939 The 78rpm recording was transferred using the Graham Slee Revelation M phono preamp in combination with the ReK-O-Kut Dehisser. The settings for the Preamp are : Mono with Bass Turnover set at 250 Hz - Flat. On the Rek-O-Kut Dehisser a Lo-Cut filter was applied at 40hz. The record produces little his but it did sound very muffled hence the mid tones were enhanced. . The record is transferred using the Ortophon Om 78 cartridge and element. The cartridge is a stereo cartridge which makes it possible to select the left or right groove wall - this would not be possible using the Grado 78c cartridge which is a true mono cartridge.
