The health hazards of GM foods were demonstrated in various longitudinal studies, such as the Dr. Arpad Pusztai groundbreaking study in the 90s. While some of the problems of GMO are caused by the altered food itself, others are produced by the hi-tech pesticides that come with it. GM crops require very potent pesticides, such as glyphosate (RoundUp)—these pesticides are highly toxic for most lifeforms, including insects, plants and mammals. ARE YOU EATING GM FOODS? Even if you're trying to avoid these in your daily life, there's a big chance at least some of what you eat is GM. Ever since their introduction in the 90s, GM foods have become ever more prevalent in human diets. GM makes for an ever growing proportion of the world's grain and cereal crops. Simultaneously, farm animals all over the world are fed on feed from these crops. Even countries where such crops are not allowed import animal feed from GM producing countries. Add to this the fact that GM grain-based products and GM-fed meat products tend to be cheaper, and you'll find it becomes ever harder to find grain and meat-based products not carrying altered genetic materials. GENETIC ROULETTE. A well-known phenomenon in genetic engineering is what may be called the genetic roulette effect, whereby any alteration in any point in a DNA strand may lead to multiple unpredictable, non-linear domino effects and mutations across the whole interdependent strand. So, when you insert a new gene into the protein strand so as to create 'drought-resistance' or the like, you may also be creating highly bio-hazardous effects to manifest sooner or later. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT, as the saying goes, and there's more to that than just the truism that we're either healthy or not according to the quality of food. The fact is that the molecular content of the food we eat regulates epigenetic expression and, hence, tissue activity and health. As a species, we're now being transitioned from having our organisms interact with natural foods to having them interact with highly synthetic, and now genetically modified, foods. The full extent of the effects of this on human epigenetics is still unknown, yet, it is likely to be catastrophic. It is most likely one of the key factors behind the rising cancer and debilitating disease rates in first world societies. Also, eating GM foods may bring about tissue mutagenesis, and that of course means changes in the receptor's genetic structure. While a part of these changes may be carcinogenic (i.e. they create cancer cells), most are not necessarily so. Yet they may still express the transformation of the receptor's genome into something different: the receptor becomes less him or herself, and perhaps even, less human. PATENTS ON LIFE. An essential part of the GM push is to legally enable biotech firms to patent genes -- life. If that wasn't already impertinent enough in itself, they're now trying to extend it to *human genes* as well. TODAY'S ANARCHIC SPREAD OF GM material in natural habitats may find its fallout in the irreparable contamination of natural gene pools and even in species collapse. It ranks among our age's gravest threats for humans and nature alike, right alongside nuclear pollution, ocean degradation, and the manipulation of atmospheric dynamics through geoengineering.
