The is a motorized rickshaw (similar to the one in India or the tuktuk in Thailand). Although it offers an exhilarating ride experience, the routes are fairly limited.Some bajaj drivers will tell you that they can take you beyond the designated routes, however it is entirely up to their discretion. Generally, the bajaj is alright for distances up to 1 km or so, for instance in our footage as above. We often use them when we have a very short trip to make and do not wish to walk. You need to ride the bajaj to fully comprehend the experience. Do give it a try. The bajaj are like the streaming veins of the city.Based on the number of seats, bajaj are built to accommodate two passengers comfortably –  but it is not an unusual sight to witness upwards of 3 passengers crammed in the back. On the side of the doors you will find a large circle that specifies the geographical area of operation, including Jakarta Barat, Jakarta Pusat, etc. Unlike riding on a motorbike, a bajaj will afford you some protection from the rain (unless it’s ’hujan besar’ and rain is bouncing off the roads straight into your lap!). Riding in a bajaj can be pretty hot, as any cooling you experience is the result of AC alam (nature’s air conditioning). In general the ride is likely to be noisy, close proximity to vehicle fumes, bumpy and fear-generating but above all, we can guarantee you that your trip in a bajaj will be a smile-inducing experience.
