Life In Another Town's video: A visit to the Bowes Museum art gallery and the paintings in the Spanish Collection

Heather has long wanted to visit the Bowes Museum, which is a nationally renowned art gallery in the historic market town of Barnard Castle, located in County Durham in northern England. The building looks very like a French chateau and was purpose built by John Edward Watson to house the art collection of John Bowes and his wife Joséphine Benoîte Coffin-Chevallier. While construction began in 1869 the museum opened in 1892. The Bowes family later became Bowes-Lyon. The maiden name of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was Bowes-Lyon. The Bowes Museum is well worth a visit, both to see the wonderful art and stroll around the extensive gardens. These are paintings by notable Spanish artists done between the 16th and 19th centuries. Many of the paintings are Christian themed works of art, depicting venerable persons in the history of the Catholic Church e.g. Christian saints, and also depictions of Bible stories from both the New and Old Testaments.
