This exquisitely designed and decorated bookstore dates back to the late 19th century and is located at the Rue de Carmelitas 144. You might familiar with its interior and the central iconic crimson-coloured stairway that has featured in the Harry Potter movies. An interesting feature is that the bookshelves and roof are made of plaster that is made to look like wood requiring a particular skill set. Adding a touch of mystery are the plaster heads that adorn the bookshelves. Two local brothers bought it as an existing bookstore and by 1906 had transformed the interior into what we see today. The interior is complemented with an 8m long ornate stained-glass ceiling with the latin script 'vecus in labore' meaning 'dignity in work'. Entrance tickets aren't bought at the book store itself but at a store a couple of doors away at a cost of 3 euros per person. Backpacks and other bulky items must be stored in the secure lockers located close by the ticket counter. If you do buy a book, then your entrance fee is redeemed.
