I've been reading and outlining with the help of THE ANATOMY OF STORY by John Truby, a really tough book on outlining. I really liked what he had to say about the fallacy of the future/the fallacy of the past and how they relate to writing sci-fi or historical fiction. Writing the future is really difficult. You have to create almost everything from scratch, but you can find a lot of inspiration here in the present. Historical fiction presents it's own challenges, but you don't have to get lost in the past either.
