Did you know that a festival in Odisha, celebrates India’s ancient ties with Bali in Indonesia? This is the 'Bali Yatra', a week-long festival that starts on the morning of Kartik Purnima. During Bali Yatra celebrations, people of Odisha assemble on the banks of the Mahanadi, in the early hours of the day, and sail paper boats with betel leaves & lamps. This tradition celebrates the voyages of their ancestors to Bali. Maritime trade between Kalinga (ancient Odisha) and Southeast Asia goes back to the 3rd century BCE, as seen from the archeological discoveries in Odisha and inscriptions of merchant guilds found in Bali. Interestingly, Masakapam Kapesih is a similar festival celebrated in Bali by floating a small boat with burning candles. Here, a child is symbolically sent to his original homeland in Kalinga.
