This is Verinag, home to the spring from which the river Vitasta, or Jhelum, Kashmir's lifeline originates Surrounded by hills, this has always been a holy shrine where pilgrims came thousands of years ago. This spring is closely associated with the origin of Kashmir and the legend around how it was carved out of a lake. According to the puranic tales, Kashmir was once a great lake inhabited by a demon named Jalodbhava. It was Sage Kashyapa, who breached the mountains and drained out the lake, defeating the demon. As the lake drained out, River Jhelum, Kashmir’s lifeline, emerged at Verinag and this helped people to settle in the ancient lake bed.
