Singapore, like its name, has a deep Indian connection. The name is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Singapura’, meaning ‘City of Lion’, and was founded by a King of Indian origin. According to Sejarah Malayu, a 15th century legend of Malay kings, an Indian king named Shulan had married a local princess and settled in the Malay peninsula. It was his descendant Sang Nila Utama, who had named the city after he saw a lion there. From the descriptions in the annals, King Shulan has many similarities with King Rajendra Chola, who had conquered the Srivijaya empire. Sang Nila Utama’s descendants king Parameshwara converted to Islam, becoming Iskandar Shah and moved his capital to Malacca in the 14th century.
