It is especially useful when piecing patchwork, where a quarter inch seam allowance is used. The machine on this video is a Frister and Rossmann transverse shuttle from about 1937. The advantage of using a seam guide on a transverse shuttle machine is that you can keep the seam guide fixed in place while you replace a bobbin, whereas with a vibrating shuttle machine (like the Singer 28K and 128K shown in our earlier videos) the seam guide is fixed over the front slide plate, which cannot be opened until the seam guide is removed.
