The scheme is called AGNEEPATH and the youth selected under this scheme will be known as Agniveers. AGNEEPATH allows patriotic and motivated youth to serve in the Armed Forces for a period of four years. Violent protest broke out at Secunderabad Railway Station on Friday against the Central government’s ‘Agnipath’ scheme for recruitment in the armed forces. The situation on the first three platforms became tense after students set two bogies on fire during the protest. NSUI activists and students also pelted stones at buses. Thousands of Army exam candidates who took part in the protest have expressed their anger and demanded the cancellation of the Agnipath scheme. They demanded that the army exam must be conducted as usual. During the protest, the parcel office was damaged, and stalls were looted. WHAT ARE THE MAIN REASONS TO OPPOSE THE SCHEME? The structure of the military has immense consequences for Indian security. The Agnipath scheme is a major structural reform with consequences both for the armed forces and society at large. Many veterans such as Lt. Generals and Major Generals have argued against Agneeveers. They are concerned that a combat soldier cannot be trained in four years, and the scheme thus compromises national security. 1. The idea of shortened training spell indirectly mocks the skill-sets for which the armed forces train their cadres so sincerely. 2. In his/her four-year tenure, the recruitment training, authorized leaves, and temporary duties would eat up to 90 weeks. 3. Agneeveers, as they will be leaving the armed forces at a tender age of 21 to 25, they can, if unemployed, fall prey to the lure of crime syndicates, radical political outfits, and worse the foreign intelligence agencies. 4. Trained in handling weapons and explosives and having the basic knowledge of military establishments functioning, such a person can be a real security threat.
