@MLC1611 How to Live without Fear and Worry (part 2)
Parabhava Sutta - Discourse on Causes of Downfall The common belief that the Buddha’s teaching is meant only for monks and nuns in monasteries is a misconception. There are numerous discourses delivered by the Buddha dealing with the welfare and happiness of ordinary men and women leading a household life in the world today. Among them, Sigālovāda Sutta, Maïgala Sutta, Vyagghapajja Sutta, Dhammika Sutta, Vasala Sutta and Parābhava Sutta are well-known to the Buddhists. These Suttas show that the Buddha was very concerned with the social life, economic progress, worldly happiness and material welfare of His lay disciples. In fact the Buddha’s teachings are not only for the good and happiness of the present world but also for the next. Parābhava Sutta or Discourse on Causes of Downfall deals with various causes which lead on to the deterioration and corruption of human beings. The Buddha mentions in this Sutta that detesting the dhamma; being lazy and fond of society; indulges in vices such as drinking, gambling and squandering away one’s possessions; involves with others’ wives; being rich but does not support one’s aged parents and relatives, are some of the causes of one’s downfall. To the Buddha, happiness was not possible without leading a pure life based on moral and spiritual principles. Parābhava Sutta belongs to the Sutta Nipāta of Khuddaka Nikāya in Sutta Piñaka. Several other talks on guidelines on how to lead a happy and meaningful life have also been included in this volume. The late Venerable Dr K Sri Dhammananda (1919-2006) began his Dhammadūta work in Malaysia in 1952. Over the years, he delivered more than 5600 talks throughout the world and also authored more than 55 publications. We are grateful to the Anatta Group for leading the project in re-compiling and editing the talks delivered by the late Venerable.
