Poesie (Poems) tratte dalla raccolta "I giochi e le ombre" (from the collection "The games and the shadows" - editore Firenze Libri)
L'amico
The friend
I removed the gifts from my house,
when I heard of his death, and my mother
brought on the terrace the white tablecloths
and the bright sheets, and she told me
i had to fast for my friend
and rimain silent; but i heard
the lament again and incomplete
and unawere words
coming from his dark bed.
I musici
Fuori la pioggia rinfrescava gli orti
ed i giardini, ed essi abbracciati
cantavano un duetto d'amore
con lunghe vesti fiorite, con le guance
rosee di carminio, e le garrule
voci imitavano le rondini;
e le foschie ristagnavano lontano,
molto lontano, ai bordi del paese
come ombre informi, in spire di serpente.
The singers
Outside, the rain cooled the fields
and gardens, and they, embraced,
sang a love duet
with their long flowered dress,
with rosy carmine cheeks, and their chattering
voices imitated the swallows;
and the mists was stagnant faraway,
very faraway, at the edges of village
like shapeless shadows, like snake coils.
L'orto
Al termine della mia vita
vedrò riaprirsi una porta, che era stata
rinchiusa quando ero fanciullo;
lasciava intravedere un lembo d'orto,
un muro sbrecciato e, a sovrastarlo,
un cielo d'un azzurro tenero,
incredibile, che mai più ho ritrovato.
Riuscirò a distinguere
qualcosa in più, di quella visione di fanciullo?
Riuscirò a rimuovere i detriti
dalle inutili esperienze passate,
per donarmi a quell'ultima immagine
puro, intero, quasi fossi emerso
solo in quell'istante alla luce?
In quel lembo di terra
posava le sue solide fondamenta
il mondo intero; tutto il resto
non ho potuto conoscerlo, mi è rimasto
ignoto nel suo delirio incomprensibile;
e oltre quella porta
io cercherò un estremo rifugio,
uscendo coraggiosamente dall'ombra
per guadagnarmi quell'ultima visione.
The garden
At the end of my life
i'll see re-open a door, which was
close again when I was a child;
it made me glimpse a strip of garden,
a crumbling wall and, dominating it,
a tender blue sky,
incredible, that I have ever found again.
Will i be able to recognize
something more of that child's vision?
Will i be able to remove the debris
from the useless past experiences
to give myself to that last picture
pure, intact, as if i had come to light
only in that instant?
In that strip of land
all the world rested
its solid foundations; everything else
i could not know it, it remained
unknown in its incomprehensible delirium;
and beyond that door
I will try a final refuge,
coming out of the shadows
to earn that final vision.
