The friend I removed the gifts from my house, when I heard of his death, and my mother brought on the terrace the white tablecloths and the bright sheets, and she told me i had to fast for my friend and rimain silent; but i heard the lament again and incomplete and unawere words coming from his dark bed. The singers Outside, the rain cooled the fields and gardens, and they, embraced, sang a love duet with their long flowered dress, with rosy carmine cheeks, and their chattering voices imitated the swallows; and the mists was stagnant faraway, very faraway, at the edges of village like shapeless shadows, like snake coils. The garden At the end of my life i'll see re-open a door, which was close again when I was a child; it made me glimpse a strip of garden, a crumbling wall and, dominating it, a tender blue sky, incredible, that I have ever found again. Will i be able to recognize something more of that child's vision? Will i be able to remove the debris from the useless past experiences to give myself to that last picture pure, intact, as if i had come to light only in that instant? In that strip of land all the world rested its solid foundations; everything else i could not know it, it remained unknown in its incomprehensible delirium; and beyond that door I will try a final refuge, coming out of the shadows to earn that final vision.
